The past five years changed history in Ecuador when the country held a political and public debate to decriminalize abortion in cases of rape and other grounds. On April 28, 2021, the Constitutional Court declared unconstitutional the article that criminalized abortion in cases of rape, except for women with mental disabilities, paving the way for all people who are survivors of sexual violence to freely access abortion.

This document highlights the role of the many organizations from the sexual

and reproductive rights (SRR) movement whom Planned Parenthood Global supported throughout the years in several processes such as compiling evidence, designing advocacy strategies, identifying effective spokespersons, and implementing creative communications campaigns that led to both legislative changes and a significant reduction in the stigma surrounding abortion in the country.
