Why Peer Education?
We know it works!
Research shows that peer educators make a lasting impact in their communities. When students see a peer presenting about social situations and pressures with confidence and knowledge, they listen. We empower teens who educate their peers. This creates positive change in their communities!

Teen Council Members...
- Use the most effective methods of contraception compared to peers
- See health providers more often for preventative health care
- Are more comfortable refusing unwanted intimate activities

What do Teen Council members do?
Teen Council programs around the country are making powerful impacts in the lives of the teens they serve and their communities.
Teen Council members are actively engaged in promoting comprehensive sex ed in their communities. In addition to engaging weekly meetings, members facilitate sex ed lessons and get involved with causes that are important to their lives.
Education
- Become trained sex educators
- Learn about sexual health topics, such as reproductive justice, contraception, and consent
- Build presentation and leadership skills
Advocacy & Awareness
- Participate in local and state-wide advocacy work, such as lobbying
- Promote cause campaigns in their schools and communities (domestic violence awareness, Get Yourself Tested, LGBTQ pride)
Presentation Topics
- Teen Council members are educators and resources in their communities
- Common Presentation topics include: STIs/HIV, Contraception, Consent, Relationships, and Reproductive Anatomy and Physiology

Teen Council is open to students entering 10-12th grade.
Where is Teen Council?
Teen Councils are sprouting up everywhere! We currently have a number of Teen Council sites all around the country, and we’re always adding more. The Peer Education Institute is excited to support you in starting your own Teen Council program. Partners that sign up for the program receive:
