Request for Proposal

Conference organizers are seeking proposals for 60-minute workshops that explore best practices in teaching sex education, healthy sexuality, reproductive health, social and reproductive justice, health equity and access for all people, and/or that examine related or intersecting topics. "Sexuality" encompasses many components:

Sexual Health & Reproduction

(the way the body works, STD, contraception, abortion, etc.)

Emotional Intimacy & Relationships

(family, friendships, partnerships, etc.)

Sexual Behavior, Pleasure & the Body

(masturbation, sex toys, kink, fetish, BDSM, etc.)

Identity

(personal, social, cultural, gender, sexual, etc.)

Power & Control and Sexuality

(contraceptive and reproductive coercion, violence and trauma, in/equality, sex work, justice work, etc.)

Additional Information

Advanced-Level Workshops – Special consideration will be given to proposals that move beyond the 101 level to provide in-depth, advanced-level information, tools, and skill-building opportunities.

Health Care Providers – We offer a track specifically tailored for people working in any capacity in the health care field. Presenters may address ways to enhance provider/patient communication, updates and best practices in sexual and reproductive health, health literacy or explore other related topics.

Workshops may be presented in any language. We welcome proposals from presenters who do not speak English or who don’t use English as their first language. Non-English language workshops may fit into one of the areas listed above or may focus on programming that is specifically designed for, created in, and delivered to a specific audience.

Compensation. We offer compensation to honor the time, experience, and expertise of our presenters. If your workshop is selected for presentation, SHS 2024 organizers will follow-up with additional information.

Deadline: Proposals are due by August 15, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. Central time.

Past SHS participants said they want information in the following areas:

Workshops may address more than one theme. Proposals that explore other areas that intersect & affect access to health care and information about sexuality are welcome, such as those that address implicit bias, curriculum development, research, youth work, resilience, trauma informed care, etc.

Diversity

Some populations face challenges regarding access to care and education opportunities. Undocumented immigrants, migrant workers, refugees, and individuals facing housing instability may be either permanent or transitory members of a population and reaching them can be difficult. We are looking for presenters who have found ways to provide education, health care and services to members of their communities that often exist at the margins.

Identity, Inclusion and Access

We all serve individuals with a range of sexual and gender identities (asexual, intersex, transgender, etc.) Presenters are encouraged to share best practices for the provision of sex-positive, inclusive education for all audiences.

Sexuality and Relationships

Relationships and sexual behaviors that fall outside conventional norms often remain unaddressed in healthcare settings or education programming. To keep all people safe, healthy, and strong, providers and facilitators need to be prepared to address all types of relationships and behaviors. Topics may include open relationships, the Lifestyle, swinging, polyamory, BDSM, kink, fetish, and other less traditional types of relationship dynamics or sexual behaviors.

Sex Work and Sex Trafficking

Legislation and social discussion often blur or deny the difference between sex work and sex trafficking. We are seeking workshops that address the intricacies and overlap of the two, provide tools used for outreach and education, and/or that review current legislation and its effect on the people it is designed to help.

Justice and Inclusion

Presenters are encouraged to explore upstream determinants of health that lead to a lack of equitable sexual and reproductive health outcomes across populations. Workshops may address ability, racism, ageism, adultism, classism, ableism, sexism, heterosexism, and other forms of oppression.

Community Engagement

Change that comes from within a community offers opportunities for creating lasting change. Presenters are encouraged to share examples of programming that empowers and supports communities in finding their own solutions.

Cross-movement Work

We are soliciting workshops on programs that explore collaborations between different types of organizations to support social justice and equity. For example, restaurants facilitating workshops on entrepreneurship that showcase and uplift female-owned businesses; soup kitchens that offer professional development opportunities and training to their participants; high school students who are learning outside the classroom doing social justice work, etc.
