Abortion pill by mail

We are proud to offer medication abortion services through a virtual visit to qualifying patients in Washington state. Call us to find out if you qualify.

The abortion pill is a safe and effective way of ending an early pregnancy.

To qualify for a medical abortion via telehealth, we require that you:

  • Have a Washington mailing address (where pills will be sent)
  • Verbally confirm that you are in Washington at the time of your telehealth appointment (this is the state we are licensed to provide care)
  • Verbally confirm that the first day of your last normal menstrual period was 8 weeks ago or less, OR you had an ultrasound showing you are less than 11 weeks pregnant (medical abortion is not for pregnancies past 11 weeks)
  • Verbally confirm that you have recently had a positive pregnancy test (a home test is fine!)
  • Confirm to us that you have regular periods
  • Are not experiencing significant bleeding and/or pain, or other medical conditions

DISCLAIMER: You must be within a state where abortion is legal in order to access medical abortion via telehealth. Failure to provide accurate information about your medical history or location is a violation of state laws and could put yourself and your provider at risk for legal action.

Abortion is very common.

It’s also very safe, and serious problems are extremely rare.

The caring staff at Planned Parenthood are experts at providing safe abortion and supporting you throughout the process. They can answer your questions, give you accurate information about all of your options, and offer non-judgmental support — no matter what you decide to do about your pregnancy.

If a medical abortion is right for you, here is what the process will look like.

Medication abortion means taking two pills. Our provider will mail these pills after your virtual visit, and they will arrive to your address in Washington within 2 - 3 days.

  • The first pill, mifepristone, works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which stops your pregnancy from developing.
  • The second pill, misoprostol, is taken up to 48 hours later, and causes cramping and bleeding that empties your uterus.
  • For most people, the process takes about five hours, but may take up to 24 hours.
  • You may be tired for a day or two afterwards, but you can go back to work or school the next day if you feel up to it.

Benefits of abortion via telehealth

Expert Care

Receive the same compassionate, non-judgmental care you've come to expect from the providers at Planned Parenthood without visiting a health center. When you receive telemedicine abortion care with us, you will always have a resource you can count on during the process, including hands-on follow-up care as needed.

Convenient & Private

Telemedicine abortion care is not only a safe method, but it also expands access to people who face barriers to care, like people living in rural areas, and people with low incomes. Now you can have your medication abortion somewhere you feel safe and comfortable, and decide who is with you or if you prefer to be alone.

Improves Access

As we navigate varied abortion laws across the US, we will see an increase of patients coming through our doors for care. Receiving abortion pills by mail via a telehealth appointment, improves our capacity to accommodate patients who must have an in-person visit for their abortion procedure.

Planned Parenthood Stands for Care

If you are pregnant and thinking about abortion, you probably have a lot of questions. We are here to guide you every step of the way, and provide the information you need to decide what’s best for you. We are here for you no matter what.
