When does enrollment for health coverage begin?

The open enrollment period for 2023 began on November 1, 2022, and ended on January 15, 2023. You can only sign up for insurance coverage on the Marketplace during the open enrollment period, unless you qualify for a special enrollment period or are eligible for coverage under Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

How do I know if I can enroll in coverage outside of the open enrollment period?

You qualify to enroll in coverage outside of the Marketplace if you qualify for a special enrollment period or you are eligible for coverage under Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Here’s a partial list of qualifying life events that may allow you to enroll in Marketplace coverage during a special enrollment period:

  • Losing your insurance coverage, such as Medicaid, COBRA, or job-based insurance.

  • Family events, including getting married, losing coverage due to divorce, or becoming a parent (these changes can also affect whether you can get financial help).

  • Becoming a lawfully present immigrant or citizen.

  • Permanently moving to a new state or area with different health coverage options.
