What is sexual dysfunction?

Sexual dysfunction is when you have trouble having sex or enjoying sex, AND this bothers you. Sexual dysfunctions are also sometimes called sexual disorders. Sex can be an important part of your health and quality of life, so dealing with sexual dysfunction can be tough physically and emotionally. Sexual disorders are very common, and most of the time they’re treatable.

Sexual dysfunctions can include:

What causes sexual dysfunction?

Lots of things can lead to sexual dysfunction, and for many people there’s more than one cause. Common causes for sexual dysfunction include things like:

  • stress

  • fear and anxiety about sex

  • alcohol, tobacco, and drug use

  • hormone levels

  • mental health issues (like depression)

  • sexual assault or trauma in your past

  • problems in your relationship

  • certain medicines and treatments

  • menopause

  • recently being pregnant, giving birth, or breastfeeding

  • medical problems like cancer, diabetes, heart problems, multiple sclerosis, or bladder problems

Are there sexual dysfunction treatments?

Treatment for sexual disorders depends on the cause. Talking with a nurse or doctor, like the ones at your local Planned Parenthood health center, can help you understand your sexual dysfunction and get the help you need.

When you visit your doctor or nurse, they may ask you questions about your medical history. They’ll give you an exam and ask you questions about your symptoms to help figure out what’s causing your issue and find the right treatment.

If you feel a little awkward talking with your nurse or doctor about your sex life, don’t worry — that’s totally normal. But nurses and doctors have seen and heard it all, and they’re there to help, not judge. Try to be open and honest with your nurse or doctor about what’s going on, so they can help you get the best treatment for you.
